Friends of the Orange County Public Library

Dear Friends,

We hope you all had a nice and relaxing Labor Day Weekend!

Book Sale

It’s that time of year again!

Our next book sale is coming up soon! Be sure to take advantage of your Friends Membership benefit and shop early at the Members-Only pre-sale on Thursday, September 18th from 5:00 – 7:00.

Author Event Fundraiser

Hillsborough writer Jan Irwin will be celebrating the release of her debut novel Finding Your Place at a launch party and reading on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Burwell School Historic Site. To recognize the contributions to our community by both the FOCPL and the Burwell School, Jan is donating $1 from every book sold at the event to each of those organizations.

Her middle-grade historical novel tells the story of life in central North Carolina in1894, when a family is forced to leave their failing farm and try to make a new life for themselves at one of the new cotton mills springing up in the area. The novel recounts the challenges and emotions 11-year-old Ginny faces as she tries to find her place in that strange environment and new way of life.

The celebration features a reading at 3:30, live music, cookies and ice cream, temporary tattoos, and children’s games from the 1890s. Join the fun, and bring any 8-12 year-olds you know with you! Local author John Claude Bemis says about Jan’s book: “The evocative world of Ginny’s mill village will capture the imaginations of children as well as adults. And young Ginny–as she struggles with change, friendships, and family–will capture readers’ hearts. Get ready for an unforgettable read!” You can learn more at Jan’s website, www.janiceirwin.com.

Janet Evanovich Event Recap

Our evening with author Janet Evanovich was so much fun! Janet delighted the crowd with tales of her career experiences and insights about her characters and stories. She’s just as witty in person as she is in her books.

Next Meeting

The next Friends board meeting will be on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00, just after the Members-Only pre-sale. All members are welcome to attend. Board elections are coming up in December, and we’d love to see some new faces at the board table! Serving on the Friends board is a great way to support your library with a minimal time commitment. As always, thank you for being a Friend!

Sincerely,

Diane Kelly, President
