December Meeting/Board Election
Just a reminder that our December meeting will be held on Thursday, December 19th at 7:00 pm in the library’s meeting room. All members are welcome. The agenda appears at the end of this newsletter. We will be holding our annual elections at this meeting and are pleased to notify the membership that, in addition to the previously announced board candidates, Laura Sumrell is running for the board.
About Laura:
Laura Sumrell likes to help others. She volunteers with a local chapter of Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) and serves as its treasurer. This national women’s organization helps women achieve their goals by providing them with scholarships and assisting them with scholarship applications. During her 46-year career at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Laura supported the company’s pharmaceutical R&D efforts. While at GSK, the Ayden, North Carolina, native supervised fundraising and team building efforts while leading global quality assurance and publishing teams. Her past volunteer work includes tutoring students in reading and math at Fayetteville Elementary School in Durham; helping with the Special Olympics in the Research Triangle Park; and sewing Quilts for Kids for the UNC Children’s Hospital.
Laura’s favorite authors are Agatha Christie and Mary Oliver. She loves Rumer Godden’s autobiography A House with Four Rooms. A long-time Chapel Hill resident, Laura moved to Hillsborough three years ago. She loves to hike, take photos for her Instagram account, travel, play the piano, and garden. Earlier this year she successfully defended her lettuce and cabbage crops from a marauding groundhog.
Goodbye With Gratitude!
Shannon Turlington has been a valuable and hardworking member of the Friends for years, serving as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and in many other capacities. She kept things going during the difficult pandemic era, and has always been a calm, thoughtful, and resourceful leader for the organization. Though she will be leaving the board at the end of 2024, her legacy will live on. We wish her all the best! If you see her around the library, be sure to tell her thanks for all her years of dedication to our library.
Writing For Games Program
Have you every wondered what it would be like to write for tabletop board games or video games? Would you like to learn more about this fascinating industry and the process? Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 9th. Writer Richard Dansky will present a program on writing for games from 1:00 – 5:00. Teens and adults are welcome. More details to come.
