Dear Friend of the Orange County Public Library,

These books were made for walking!

With the new year comes an opportunity for you to be part of an exciting project for kids of all ages. The Orange County Public Library has teamed up with Orange County Parks & Recreation to establish a “story trail” for children, encouraging interest in reading along with physical activity. A story trail is a series of stations along a walkway or hiking trail. Each station has a page or two from a children’s book, and when children complete the trail, they complete the book. The initial location for the panels will be at Efland-Cheeks Park. This park is adjacent to an elementary school and has a quarter-mile paved track that is ideal for the stations. The stations are moveable and may be relocated to other areas in the future. Plus, the books change four times as year.

The library asked the Friends of the Orange County Public Library to fund this worthwhile project, which is sure to delight budding readers. We voted unanimously to provide the initial $8,305 to establish the story trail, which will fund 17 treated-wood display stations and the first set of story panels. Future costs to change the stories each quarter are estimated to be around $4,000 per year.

We welcome donations in any amount to help underwrite the costs of the story trail. Individuals who donate $250 by May 1st or businesses that donate $500 by May 1st will be named on a panel attached to a station.

This is the perfect chance to leave a literary legacy to your community. You can donate via the Friends website at: https://focplnc.org/donate/. Be sure to click on “Write a Note” at the top of the page where you enter your credit card or PayPal information to designate your funds for this project and to indicate the individual name or business name for inclusion on the panel. Or send a check and your contact information to the Friends of the Orange County Public Library, c/o Orange County Public Library, 137 W. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

As always, thank you for being a Friend!

Sincerely,

Diane Kelly, President
