    Paul Hulton's edition of every surviving drawing by John White, who sailed with Thomas Harriot as artist and mapmaker on Raleigh's 1585 voyage to Roanoke Island and later governed the ill-fated colony. His watercolors of the Carolina Algonquians and their country are the most informative early pictures of a Native society on the Atlantic coast. The British Museum, which keeps the originals, published the book with UNC Press in 1984; 213 pages, some in color.
