Papers of Nell Irvin Painter, historian of nineteenth and twentieth century American and African American history, who taught at Harvard, Princeton, Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina and later earned BFA and MFA degrees in painting. The 134,625 items (184.25 linear feet) hold correspondence, writings and research, teaching and personal files, and photographs, including her work on Sojourner Truth, Hosea Hudson, the Exodusters and 'Standing at Armageddon'.
