Subjects include the Speaker Ban Law, Ku Klux Klan activity in North Carolina, Tar Heel basketball and football, the Jubilee festival, the Old Well, and visitors including Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Bob Hope and Jayne Mansfield.

Carter worked as a newspaper editor and later joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Subjects include African American civil rights, civil rights movements, community organization, Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Knight Foundation, with 1964 singled out as a date.
