Devereux, John · 1712

Papers of the Pollock and Devereux families, 1712 to 1892, among the largest landowners and enslavers in antebellum North Carolina. The small lot includes Pollock papers from before and after the two families joined, plantation and farm management papers, lists of enslaved people, and Confederate supply and quartermaster material. Orange County enters through the Haw Fields.

  1. Frances Devereux deeds Primus to Dr. Edmund Strudwick Five months after her husband died, Frances Devereux of Raleigh deeded Primus to Dr. Edmund Strudwick of Hillsborough. Primus later drove and gardened at the Burwell School and, after emancipation, worked at the Nash and Kollock School as Primus Smith.
