Papers of Cushing Biggs Hassell, merchant and Primitive Baptist clergyman of Williamston in Martin County, and his son Sylvester Hassell, 259 items from 1814. Topics include the family store, prices of crops and goods, the Fort Fisher assault, Union prisons at Fort Warren and Governor's Island, the Democratic Party and the state constitution. Kemp P. Slade (Family : · 1751

Papers of the Slade family of Martin County, 1751 to 1929, 2,781 items: letters, account books, daybooks, time books, court records and more. Jeremiah Slade (born 1775) sat in both houses of the legislature, served as a commissioner for Tuscarora affairs and was a brigadier general in the War of 1812. His son Thomas Bog Slade attended the University of North Carolina. Plantations and slavery are recurring subjects.
