Former governor George Burrington pledges 30,000 acres of the Haw Old Fields to Samuel Strudwick To secure a debt then grown to about 2,000 pounds, Burrington conveyed 40,000 acres to Strudwick by lease and release with a mortgage clause, 30,000 of them in the Haw Old Fields. General John Guise, who acquired Burrington's right of redemption, passed it to Strudwick on September 28, 1761. Samuel A. Ashe's eight volume set of North Carolina biographies, published by C.L. Van Noppen from 1905 and running from the colonial period forward. The sketches take in governors, judges and public men, among them William Tryon, Frederick Nash, Richard Henderson and Matt W. Ransom.
