Papers of McGilvery M. Staton, a brick dealer, farmer and slaveholder of Williamston in Martin County, and of his neighbors there, 314 items from 1807. Letters come from David L. Swain, Elisha Mitchell, William James Bingham, Asa Biggs and John Spelman, and topics include the settling of Staton's estate in 1861, the University of North Carolina, lotteries and newspapers.

Papers of the Slade family of Martin County, 1751 to 1929, 2,781 items: letters, account books, daybooks, time books, court records and more. Jeremiah Slade (born 1775) sat in both houses of the legislature, served as a commissioner for Tuscarora affairs and was a brigadier general in the War of 1812. His son Thomas Bog Slade attended the University of North Carolina. Plantations and slavery are recurring subjects.
