Student notebooks in physics kept by Wayne Alexander Bowers (1919 to 2008) during 1939 and 1940, when he was at Cornell University. Hans A. Bethe (1906 to 2005) is also named among the Cornell faculty of those years. Bowers later taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is how the notebooks connect to the town.
