Alexander (1904 to 1992), in the second of three interviews, describes his schooling in Mecklenburg County, Charlotte and Chapel Hill in the 1910s and 1920s, beginning at the one-room Mallard Creek School. Rural education, corporal punishment, getting children to school, amusements, student life at UNC and the botanist William Chambers Coker come up.
