William Kirkland opens his own store in Hillsborough
William Kirkland, who left Ayr, Scotland, to work in the mercantile trade, had married and opened his own store in Hillsborough by 1793.

Twenty Black members leave First Baptist Church of Hillsborough and organize Mount Bright Baptist Church
Twenty Black members withdrew from First Baptist Church of Hillsborough in 1866, or about 1868 by another account, and organized a congregation of their own, named for its first pastor, Rev. Alfred E. Bright. The widow of Governor William A. Graham gave the group the West Union Street site where the congregation still worships.

Mount Bright Baptist Church's first building burns
Fire destroyed Mount Bright Baptist Church's original building, on the lot Susan Graham had given the congregation. The 2014 Hillsborough Historic District documentation places that first church on South Churton Street near the Eno, before the congregation moved to West Union Street early in the twentieth century.

Mount Bright Baptist Church is rebuilt
Three years after the fire, Mount Bright's members raised a new church; the Rev. Alvis Whitted was then the pastor. The congregation's present church on West Union Street dates from 1979.

Randee Haven-O'Donnell is named Soil and Water Conservation Teacher of the Year
Haven-O'Donnell, who taught in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, was named Orange County and North Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Teacher of the Year.

Orange, Person and Caswell make their Hyconeechee libraries county departments
The Hyconeechee Regional Library board and the three county governments made each county library a department of its own county, responsible for procurement, personnel, accounting, travel and facility maintenance. The regional library kept regional policy, collection development, grants and the regional budget under a joint contract with the counties.

Randee Haven-O'Donnell is elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen
After serving on the Carrboro Planning Board and other town advisory boards, Haven-O'Donnell won a seat on the Board of Aldermen in 2005, the first of five consecutive terms. She had moved to Carrboro in 1978 and taught in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

The first Eve Marie Carson Scholar is announced
Students, friends and family turned Carson's plan for a student-run scholarship into the Eve Marie Carson Scholarship. The first scholar, a junior, received funding for a summer experience and aid toward senior-year tuition.

Several thousand gather in the Pit on the anniversary of Eve Carson's death
Students, faculty and staff met in the Pit, where friends spoke about Carson, Chancellor Holden Thorp recalled her service, the Clef Hangers sang and the Bell Tower tolled Hark the Sound.

Sammy Slade is elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen
Slade, a carpenter with a psychology degree from UNC who was raised in Bogota and Chapel Hill, won a seat on the Board of Aldermen in November 2009 and was reelected in 2013. He went on to serve fourteen years on the town's governing board.
