Trustees honor Benjamin Smith by naming the new hall for him
In 1852 the trustees gave the new library and ballroom building the name of Benjamin Smith of Brunswick, whose gift of 20,000 acres of Tennessee land at the board's first meeting was the first donation to the university.

Kemp P. Battle gives a University Day address on the history of the campus buildings
In Gerrard Hall on University Day, President Kemp P. Battle traced each university building from the laying of the Old East cornerstone in 1793 to Memorial Hall, then under construction. The address was printed as a pamphlet.

Work on Memorial Hall stops for the winter after a cost miscalculation
Battle told the students that construction of Memorial Hall would pause over the winter because the architect had underestimated the cost and the treasury needed refilling. Builders also advised letting the green roof timbers dry under cover before work resumed in the spring.
