  2. N. Ferebee Taylor serves as chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill

    Nelson Ferebee Taylor was the chief administrative officer of the Chapel Hill campus for eight years. His office's records deal with desegregation, the federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare lawsuit and consent decree, and campus development.

  3. Chancellor Taylor spends a night in Winston Residence Hall

    Protest or organizing · Winston Residence Hall, UNC, Chapel Hill

    Chancellor N. Ferebee Taylor and other administrators stayed overnight in Winston Residence Hall to draw attention to overcrowded student housing. The same year Winston became UNC's first room-by-room coed residence hall.

  4. Protesters stop Klan leader David Duke from speaking in Memorial Hall

    Protest or organizing · Memorial Hall, UNC, Chapel Hill

    Black students filled the pit of Memorial Hall and kept Ku Klux Klan representative David Duke, invited by the Union Forum, from giving his speech. Chancellor N. Ferebee Taylor called the disruption a transgression of one of the university's highest traditions.

  6. Pauli Murray declines an honorary degree from UNC

    Award or honor · Chapel Hill

    Chancellor N. Ferebee Taylor wrote to Murray on February 10, 1978 offering her an honorary Doctor of Laws at the commencement of May 14, 1978. Murray declined, citing the University's dispute with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare over dismantling segregation and her refusal to share the platform with Governor Jim Hunt.
