  2. Students petition trustees to close the university for the war

    Protest or organizing · Chapel Hill

    After Fort Sumter the juniors, sophomores and freshmen asked the trustees to suspend exercises until fall, since eight or ten students were leaving each day. The petition was refused, and President Swain issued a circular that the university would go on as before.
