  2. The Hogan-Rogers House was built on the Hogan plantation on Purefoy Road

Building · Purefoy Road, Chapel Hill

The house on Purefoy Road, on land now owned by St. Paul AME Church, dates to the 1840s and stood on the Hogan plantation, where enslaved people lived in its basement. INDY Week reported in 2012 that many Rogers-Eubanks residents descend from people held on the plantation.

  3. Freedpeople build a church and school at Chapel Hill's West End

    Chapel Hill

After emancipation, Black families kept homes and small farms on Chapel Hill's west end. St. Paul's congregation, first gathered under an arbor in December 1864, built a log church on Merritt Mill Road and bought land in 1878, and in 1866 Benjamin Craig and Green Cordal bought an acre nearby for a freedmen's school.

The other dated entries wait behind a subject, a place, an era, a month, or the All dated entries switch, and each storyline’s page carries its own component entries. Dates come from the sources named on the cards and from the index’s event pages; where sources disagree, the card follows the county records. Entries marked approximate or needing research say so on the card; the rest were checked against the source named on it. Each card’s “Correct this” link opens the contact form with the entry already named. Suggest an event →
