On November 24, the Friends of the Orange County Public Library will host its first ever Hillsborough Local Author Book Fair! You can read more about the event here. Leading up, we’ll be posting short interviews with some of our author guests. Today we feature Anne Anthony!
Who did you dedicate your first book to and why?
I dedicated The Collection: Flash Fiction for Flash Memory, to my mother, Irene McCandless Anthony, because she instilled in her six children the love of reading by her example. She was the inspiration for this book intended to be read by those experiencing memory changes. Toward the end of her life, she was no longer able to read the long novels she loved, switched to short stories until they too became too difficult to remember. If she’d had this collection of flash fiction stories between 500 to 750 words her reading life could have been extended by years.
If we were to tweet one sentence from one of your books, which sentence would you choose?

“My mother raised six children who were constantly underfoot, but when she read she’d lose herself to different worlds, one without dirty diapers, a messy kitchen, and piles of laundry.”
What was the hardest part of the writing process for you to master?
I’d actually change the tense of this question from past to present since I still wrestle with the revision phase of the writing process. Other writers mention losing their muse and staring down the blank page. I’ve never had that problem. For me, it’s the combing through the words, sentences and even whole sections of what I’ve written and teasing out what isn’t working.
