FOCPL Minutes 01/09/2020

  1. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.

Present: Melissa Bourbon, Grace Johnston, Diane Kelly, James Maxey,Wendy Scott, Dee Stribling, Shannon Turlington

Absent: Samantha Bryant, Gail Corrado, Michael Corrado, Stacey Gamble

  1. Library Update: Nancy briefed the Board on Main Library Highlights.

•Staff Development Day (supported by FOCPL) was a training event with Dr. Ronda Bullock, director and facilitator of We Are (Working to Extend Anti-racist Education). This successful program focused on having staff consider their identities (e.g., race, religion, sexuality, language, socio-economic status, education, and ability); defining and discussing implicit bias; and discussion about discrimination in libraries.

•The Adult and Teen Services division was awarded an LSTA (Library Services and Technology)Diversity and Inclusion mini-grant in the amount of $2,000 for the Orange County Oral History Project to highlight and document the historical experience of the senior citizen African-American population. LSTA grants are federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services that are awarded by the State Library of North Carolina.The project is to be completed by June 30 - Nancy will give the Board updates on progress.

•The search to fill the Assistant Director position is in progress. Posting in pending approval from Orange County Human Resources.

  1. Library Support Request. The Board unanimously approved a Support Request for $1,200.00 for a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the Main Library in its current location. The event will recognize and celebrate patrons/families, staff, Friends and reflect the library as part of the community. Funds will support refreshments and give-aways for guests at an open house on April 19.
  2. Membership Update: On December 15 a mailing was sent to previous members who had not re-upped. To date, eleven renewals were made in response. The total number of members was 89 in 2019. Tax receipts have been sent out.
  3. Finance update: For 2019: we took in $20,392.53. Total expenditures were $23,544.57. Current balance is $44,496.
  4. January Booksale: Set-up on Thursday, January 23, beginning at noon. Sale is Friday, January 24 - Sunday, January 26. Friday and Saturday hours are 9:30 - 5:30; Sunday noon - 4:00 (breakdown begins at 4:00). Shannon will send out a sign-up sheet.
  5. Calendar planning (in proposed chronological order below):

October 30 or November 1: Writing Workshop(s) in conjunction with National Novel Writing Month - we can get some feedback via Facebook etc. regarding topics of interest

December 5 Annual Meeting

  1. Website - brief discussion of the FOCPL website. Regarding a proposed Newsletter for Friends members: Schedule for distribution could be just before each book sale. Include report on the results of efforts/activities funded by FOCPL. Melissa will draft a version.
  2. Open Forum: Discussion of issues around eliminating fines for late books, which is being considered by the Library.
