FOCPL Board Meeting

June 8, 2023, 7:00 p.m.

Minutes

Call to order

Members present: Mark Alexander, Diane Decker, Grace Johnston, Marc Miller, Wendy Scott, Shannon Turlington Guests: Tess Tessier, Jennifer Tolliver.

The Board unanimously approved the addition of Jennifer Tolliver and Tess Tessier to the Board. Jennifer agreed to serve as secretary, replacing Samantha Bryant who resigned after many of

years of service.

Treasurers report: $23,768 checking $17,439 money market

Membership report: There are 115 active memberships currently.

Library report: Summer Learning is underway with good attendance at the opening event; registration for the program is strong. The Friends are helping support Summer Learning with a

contribution of $5,600.

Library staff will set up a table for the Friends during the Juneteenth celebration on June 17. —Diane Decker and Mark Alexander will staff the table.

Old business: Storywalk - we are working on a date on which interested Board members can see some current ones (in Chapel Hill and Burlington).

National novel writing month in November — Discussion of holding a “Write-in”, offering time and space along with refreshments to writers. A good idea to bring extension cords; possible offer some small prizes. Booked the room for Saturday, November 4.

New business: We need to get advice on the rules regarding paying sales tax from book sales. Tess will consult

an accountant whom she knows from other non-profit work.

A suggestion was made that we consider corporate membership, possibly at the $500 level. Companies could be acknowledged with their logo on website. Diane Decker is working on organizing the sorting room.

There will not be a July meeting. The next meeting is August 10.
