December 19, 2024 MEETING MINUTES 

1) CALL TO ORDER/ESTABLISH QUORUM – called to order 7:01, quorum established

Present:  Diane Decker, Diane Kelly, William McLean, Melissa Bourbon Ramirez, Meg Stouffer, Grace Johnston, Mark Alexander

2)  November minutes approved unanimously

3) TREASURER'S REPORT 

Total bank balance is $37,405.33. 

$455.00 memberships 

$331.00 ongoing book sale 

$68.31 interest 

($380.00) Town Scoop gift cards for library staff 

($29.66) fees 

($29.03) Dollar Tree supplies for gift bags for library staff 

Total up $415.62

4) MEMBERSHIP REPORT 

150 active members. Since last meeting, 2 gifts totaling $65

5) LIBRARY REPORT (Nancy Crews)

Youth Service:

Inclusive Minds Youth Social Club – for neurodivergent kids 8-18 – program meeting monthly on a Sunday afternoon – Attendance is strong!  They will continue on through April and take a break for the summer.

Looking Ahead…Youth Services will host “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on Saturday, Feb. 1st from 9-12 with a variety of self-directed activities and a magic show at 10:30.

Adult Service:

Welcome to Medicare! - Free Medicare Seminar on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025 from 12-1:30 pm -- eligible for Medicare and feeling overwhelmed by all the information “bombarding” you? The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and the Orange County Department on Aging are here to help! 

Library After Dark: A Silent Reading Club (registration preferred)

Is it great to have a quiet hour to sit and read whatever you want (and maybe have a little snack)? You can do that at the Library After Dark! 

Starting in January, enjoy quiet, after-hours reading in company on 4th Thursdays at Main Library in Hillsborough. Registration is preferred.

We'll gather in the library's Meeting Room starting at 6:30 -- be sure to get here before the library closes at 7! Bring whatever you'd like to read. We'll also have a selection of Lucky Day and New Release books to check out if you like. Coffee, tea, and some light refreshments will be available.

7) BUSINESS

  1. Update was given on the video game writing program to be held on March 9, 2025, for Teens and adults.
  2. Update was given on the poetry fundraiser for charities assisting with hurricane relief. It will be held on January 23, 2025, via Zoom.
  3. Janet and Alex Evanovich program proposal: Separate events were discussed. Diane Kelly will propose this to both Alex and Janet. The board approved a $500 honorarium for each author, as well as a meal at a local restaurant in conjunction with the program.
  4. March Book Sale
      1. Community Works to do pick-up was discussed. Concern over whether they’ll be in business, but thought is that it is being backed by someone.
      2. Restore was suggested as an alternative. 
  5. A vote on $35 annual membership in the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries was supported. Diane will submit the form.
  6. Election of Candidates: The slate of nominees was unanimously voted in.
