Friends of the Orange County Public Library Executive Board Meeting, June 14, 2010

Present: Janet Flowers, Susanne Vergara, Linda Schmitt, Ann Burton, Bill Barrows and Lucinda Munger, Library Director. Co-Chair, Ann Burton, called the meeting to order at 4:00PM. Lucinda gave an update on library budget. County commissioners will be voting on final approval for budget June 15 and are expected to approve additional funding. This additional funding will allow the Carrboro Cybrary to be opened 30 hours and the main library to be open on Sundays and Thursday evenings. These expanded hours will begin in Sept Sunday openings will be tied to school year (Sept. - end of May). Thursday night openings will be year round. The Cedar Grove branch library wil1 be closed pennanently end of July for a variety of reasons (low circulation, low usage of computers, security issues). Isabelle Jackson, librarian at Cedar Grove facility, will be taking a new position with the Dept. of Aging. There is no change in Carrboro hours. All branches face reduced funding for programs and materials. In the near future, Lucinda will be presenting a 3-5 year strategic library plan for county wide libraries to county commissioners. Lucinda further reported that Children and Teens librarians are preparing a report of possible programs/services that could be provided by funds from Friends as stated in our guidelines; this would supplement funds which have been reduced by county . Minutes of the April meeting, presented by Ann Burton, were approved and accepted. In the absence of treasurer, Sandy Gerstner, Janet Flowers gave the.monthly financial report. Original attached in minutes notebook. Current checking balance is $20,516.72. Other notes from report: On going book sale = $1 ,290.70 to date; Paver sales = $3,207.00 to date. Susanne gave a report from programming committee. A new "program guideline" was submitted and approved to replace the "events policy" approved at May meeting. A form has been created for submission of possible programs sponsored by Friends. Susanne also announced the following future programs ( details to be decided): 1. Sept. 25 - programs to be presented for children and adults by book illustrator/author, Marie Mohler. 2. Spring 2011 - presentation of a book presently underway by thirty Orange County artists related to trees. Proceeds to benefit Haw River Assembly. Fall Friends Book Sale will be August 27 and 28. These dates were chosen as meeting room was available for the week/no programs or meetings previously schedufed. Friday night hours will be 3-7PM for members only; 7-9PM will be open to all public as this is August Last Friday. Prices will be: $ 1.00 hardback, .50 paperback, and .50 video. Janet
suggested that memberships purchased at book sale extend through 2011. Board approved hours for sale and membership extension. Additional strategy for book sale was approved by board: there will be no bag sale on last day; bumper stickers will be given away; means of donating left over books will be explored (Craig's List, OCIM, etc.). Janet gave paver update. Sale ends July 1. Thirty eight pavers have been sold to date. If amount sold is less then 100, shipping costs will be charged. PLEASE promote sale of these pavers to friends and family. Linda announced that public art sculpture, "Embrace the Moment'\ has been installed by artist, Wayne Trapp. River rocks will be added for seating near sculpture. Funding for this first piece of public art in Northern Orange was provided by: Orange County Arts Commission $5,000 Hillsborough Tourism Board $2,500 Friends of the Library $2,500 Installation/Signage also provided by Orange Co. Arts Commission Dedication of this public art will be Saturday, August 7 in conjunction with library's celebration of 100 years of history. An exhibit of library's history will be provided at Orange County Historical Museum. An exhibit on artist will be displayed in library's main entry display case. The Rebecca Wall Collection Room will also be dedicated at this ceremony. More details of celebration to follow as programs are planned for the public (adults and children).
