Friends of the Orange County Public Library Executive Board Meeting - April 12, 2010

Present: Janet Flowers, Ann Burton, Linda Schmitt, Susanne Vergara, Sandy Gerstner, Bill Barrows and John Idol
Co-chair, Ann Burton, called the meeting to order at 4:00PM.
Minutes from March meeting were approved . Treasurer, Sandy Gerstner, gave the monthly financial report ( original attached to minutes). Checking balance = $18,859.23. Memberships totaling $1 ,690.00 were deposited in past month. Sixteen pavers were sold. Three missing/damaged pavers will have to be replaced. Ongoing book sale has netted $777 .50 to date. Sandy is continuing completion of required IRS forms and was thanked for her work.
Thanks to Ann, Bill Barrows and Matt Pockney for their continued efforts with ongoing book sale. Susanne gave an update on April 24th literary event featuring Eno River Publishing's newest book: "27 Views of Hillsborough". Michael Malone will moderate the group of featured writers. Sound system will be borrowed from Hillsborough Arts Council. Orange County Historical Museum will sell t-shirts with street map of town (similar to book cover) and donate I 0% to Friends. Time for event is 3:00- 5:00 with volunteers setting up at 2:00. Members of the Event Committee are: Ann Burton, Janet Flowers, Libby Hough, Miriam Palacio, Helen Swindford, Joan Terry, Susanne Vergara, Mary Wiley and Lisa Wolfe. Susanne also presented plans for a Saturday, June 5th, 10:00AM event at library featuring Carrboro master bookbinder, Susan Solei. Susan will
donate 20% of comn1issioned work derived from this event to Friends.
John Idol announced that he will donate approximately $75.00 to the endowment fund so that fund will total $2,000.00. Endowment committee will meet soon to plan expansion plans. John will also write a letter to potential donors for this endowment. An attorney is needed for the committee.
Board members discussed potential ideas for promoting paver project. Ideas include possibility of providing a table with infonnation at "Girls Night Out" on April 22 and also a "Find the Paver" contest during May's Last Friday. John generously offered to provide $50.00 as prize money for this event. Linda will check on possibility of table on April 22.
Janet gave an update on recent state meeting. Keynote speakers were Skip Ault, Director of Durham Public Libraries and Reese Jones, Pittsboro Friends of the Library. Mr. Ault reported that the national overall funding for public libraries is $34.95 per capita; NC's average is $21.64. The NC Public Library Director's Association is working to help close the gap. The first step is to prevent cuts to funding for public libraries in NC. The Friends Board will be exploring ways we can support this effort. Mr. Jones explained how his group has raised $750,000 for the new Pittsboro library! Friends of NC Library Fall Meeting will be in November in High Point with Mary Boone, NC State Librarian, as the primary speaker. Linda announced that public art sculpture will be ready for installation in either late May or early June.
