If a work in the bibliography lives at UNC, Duke, NC State, or another North Carolina library, interlibrary loan can usually bring it to OCPL: free for most requests, up to four at a time, placed in person, by phone, or online. Special-collections items stay at their home library for in-person use, and books published in the past year are better handled as a purchase suggestion.

Research and Sources
About the bibliography, sources, and corrections
What is included. Books and substantial publications about Orange County, its communities, institutions, people, and history, from the colonial era to today. Campus and university material, government documents, and archival items are all part of the record; each group sits behind its own filter in the search above so the everyday view stays focused on the county's story. Editions are listed as their source catalogs record them, and a work missing here is a gap in the sources or in our matching, not a judgment.
How the record was compiled. The bibliography began with curated sources: the North Carolina Literary Map, a project of the UNC Greensboro University Libraries and the State Library of North Carolina; Read North Carolina Novels, a UNC Libraries project cataloguing fiction set in each county; the county histories in the Orange County history guide kept by the North Carolina Collection at UNC's Wilson Library; and an August 2026 gap review that added verified works on subjects those lists under-covered, including the Regulator movement, Black history and civil rights, foodways, and the Occaneechi record. A systematic harvest then swept the catalogs of six library systems: OCPL, UNC, Duke, NC State, NC Central, and NC Cardinal, the State Library's consortium of more than forty North Carolina library systems. Working from more than two thousand Orange County subject headings, it gathered every cataloged work those headings describe, verified each against its Library of Congress subject data, and screened out the other Hillsboroughs and Orange Counties of the world. Most works added this way carry topic and town tags derived from cataloger-assigned headings rather than hand review, so treat them as good approximations. Works OCPL holds link to the catalog; the rest show which libraries hold them, one interlibrary loan request away, and "read free" links go to NC LIVE's HomeGrown collection, open to every North Carolina library cardholder. The record will be re-swept against the same catalogs periodically, so it grows as libraries acquire and catalog new work. It is extensive but surely not complete.
Corrections and additions. This page is provided as a community research and discovery tool; collection selection and catalog records are managed by the Orange County Public Library.
